The 19th edition of the A&T (Automation & Testing) trade show, held in Torino (Italy) from 12 to 14 February 2025 and dedicated to Technological Solutions, Innovation, Reliability and Skills 4.0-5.0, featured an insightful presentation of Dr. Alessandra Manzin (Project Coordinator of MAIBAI), entitled “Application of Artificial Intelligence in breast screening: The role of synthetic data and validation steps“.
The talk was part of the workshop “Artificial Intelligence and Metrology: medical applications“, in the framework of the 44th edition of the event “La Giornata della Misurazione”, organized on 14 February 2024 by the Italian associations “Electric and Electronic Measurements” and “Mechanical and Thermal Measurements”.
The talk illustrated the main aspects involved in the application of AI to cancer detection in breast screening, including a description of the main features of mammography images, the creation of clinical databases, the categorisation of images on the basis of sub-population and key-acquisition parameters, the generation of synthetic data with physics and AI-driven modelling, the validation of AI models in breast cancer detection with proper quantitative metrics, and the definition of the concept of AI explainability in the medical domain.
