In the occasion of the end of the project, MAIBAI members met at the PhysikalischTechnische Bundesanstalt (PTB), in Berlin on the 17th July 2026, to discuss the project achievements. Representatives from all the consortium members attended the meeting, also in hybrid modality.
MAIBAI 3rd Stakeholder workshop aims at discussing the main results achieved by the project, providing a comprehensive evaluation framework for AI in diagnostic imaging, using breast cancer screening as an exemplar.
The exponential increase in healthcare data, as well as the fast-paced technology developments, have resulted in promising novel AI systems for disease detection and risk prediction. However, the adoption of AI in clinical settings remains limited, mostly due to the limited data quality and interoperability across heterogeneous clinical centres and electronic health records, the absence of robust validation procedures, and the distrust of predictions and decisions generated by AI systems.
Starting from the experience of the European Metrology Partnership Project 22HLT05 MAIBAI, this workshop aims at discussing the main strategies that can be adopted to face the above issues, with the design of a standardised and impartial framework for performance, generalisability and suitability assessment of AI systems in the clinical domain. Special attention will also be devoted to the development of large-scale and high-quality medical databases, the investigation of real-world data and the key standards relevant to AI-enabled medical devices.
In the occasion of the beginning of the third quarter-term (M27), MAIBAI members met at the University of Ljubljana (SI), on 10–12 December 2025, to discuss the project achievements, next steps and joint collaboration activities.
The University of Ljubljana has prepared a survey about the use of AI tools for automated breast cancer detection in mammography. The target group comprises breast radiologists and diagnostic imaging specialists.

Martina Oria, PhD student working at the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM) participated in the event “Just the woman I am”, held in Torino (Italy) in March 2025, with a pitch talk on AI application in breast screening.
In the occasion of the mid-term period (M18), MAIBAI members met at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) in Rome (Italy), on 17–18 February 2025, to discuss the project achievements, next steps and joint collaboration activities.
On 14 February 2025, Dr. Alessandra Manzin (INRiM), MAIBAI coordinator, presented an oral contribution titled “Application of Artificial Intelligence in breast screening: The role of synthetic data and validation steps”, at the 19th edition of the A&T trade show, dedicated to Technological Solutions, Innovation, Reliability and Skills 4.0-5.0.
On 22 November 2024, Dr. Alessandra Manzin (INRiM), coordinator of MAIBAI, illustrated the progress of the project at the Mathmet/PTB workshop on metrology for AI in medicine, held in Berlin (Germany) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB).
